This hands-on STEM module introduces students to renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable technology. Through practical challenges and experiments, students explore how energy is produced, transferred, stored, and used—and how innovative solutions can help create a more sustainable future.
What Students Will Explore
- Solar Energy – Build solar ovens, cars, or fan models and explore how sunlight can be converted into useful energy.
- Wind Energy – Design and test mini wind turbines to investigate energy generation.
- Water Power – Explore how moving water can produce mechanical energy through water wheel demonstrations.
- Energy Audits – Investigate how energy is used in school environments and identify opportunities to reduce consumption.
- Batteries & Energy Storage – Explore how batteries store and deliver energy through simple investigations.
- Heat & Insulation – Conduct heat-loss experiments and explore ways to improve energy efficiency.
- Carbon Footprint – Reflect on everyday energy choices and their environmental impact.
- Renewable Energy Pitches – Develop and present ideas for renewable energy solutions.
- Energy-Saving Challenges – Design practical solutions to reduce energy use in everyday environments.
Learning Outcomes
Students develop an understanding of renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainability, engineering, and environmental problem-solving while practising skills in experimentation, design, data collection, teamwork, and communication.
- Safely observe the sun using specialized telescopes and approved optical equipment (weather permitting).
- High powered water rockets test fly with demonstration of Newton’s laws of motion.
- Introduction to Astronomy and Telescopes (live session on robotic telescopes (weather permitting).
- Build and test fly amazing high performance Stomp Rockets.
- Includes a set of rainbow glasses, UV color changing beads and solar clock activity.
- Comprehensive worksheets are provided with guidelines on how to further study these fascinating and important subjects.
- Recommended age range 9-13 years.
